A Dundee businessman is calling for local businesses to back his campaign for a “huge” campus in the city.

John Alexander, who runs Alexander Decorators, wants to convert an old Victorian school in Mitchell Street into an educational facility.

He says he is currently in talks with Dundee City Council, who owns the building, over a community asset transfer.

“I am looking to create a huge community campus covering all sectors – such as hairdressing, media, gaming – and I want other business leaders to join me,” he said.

“We have further education and higher education but this would be community education with short duration courses to give people a taste of what they can do.”

He is calling for at least eight businesses from all sectors to join the initiative, which he would also like to include a 30-seat cafe for hospitality courses.

“I am proud of being from Dundee and want to bring together others from the city for this,” he added.

“Dundee City Council owns the building so I am trying to get a community asset transfer.

“There is a lot of to-ing and fro-ing at the moment.

“We have two or three people who are interested and we are looking for big companies who want to give something back after two years of Covid.”

A Dundee City Council spokesperson said: “It would not be appropriate to comment on individual applications.”
