Plans for a new office block opposite the V&A at Dundee’s Waterfront have received a mixed reaction.
On Tuesday, we revealed details for the office block at Site 6, across from the V&A, have been submitted by architecture firm Cooper and Cromar.
The site was originally earmarked for a hotel, but those plans fell through in January.
And the proposals for another office block next to the existing Agnes Husband House have disappointed Courier and Evening Telegraph readers.
Site 6 plans branded an ‘absolute joke’
They took to Facebook to voice their opinions.
Peter Taylor said: “Why do we need more offices in the town?
“What we need is more shops to open, very sadly our once great city is getting more like a ghost town.”
Karen Abercrombie said the plans were an “absolute joke”.
She added the city needs visitor attractions to attract tourists.
“Really is a sorry state for so-called City of Discovery,” she added.
Phillip Craig said: “This area will go down on history as a massive missed opportunity. To fill the space with office blocks is criminal.
“Visitors want shops, pubs, restaurants, cinema bowling etc, such a shame.”
David Anderson, meanwhile, voiced his concerns the offices might spoil the view.
“Just what we need, another empty office block spoiling the view over the River Tay and also looking hideous from the Fife side.”
Another commenter, Ann Storrie, feels there are already disused buildings in the city that could be used for offices.
She wrote: “Not what we need. There are plenty empty buildings in Dundee that can serve same purpose if companies can take the time to do them up.”
Some positive reaction office plans
But not everyone thought the proposed development – which still needs planning approval from Dundee City Council – was a bad idea.
Sheena Cochrane said: “I like it. Modern and contemporary just as everything that is built on the vacant plots at the waterfront will be.”
Lance Fraser added: “Brilliant, hopefully it brings more people into the town putting more life in the centre and helping the shops, cafes, pubs & restaurants.”
However the majority of the 200-plus comments on the post shared by The Evening Telegraph were not in favour of the development.
The proposals for the five-storey office building will be considered by the council in the coming months.
If the plans for Site 6 get the go-ahead from the local authority, work will begin early in 2023.
