ScotRail’s train timetable can be found in each of its stations – and inside a Broughty Ferry pub.
That is after Jonathan Stewart, who runs the Royal Arch Bar and Bistro, decided to have the technology installed in the pub.
Mr Stewart, who has run the pub for more than two decades, is a past president of the Dundee Licensed Trade Association.
He began his career in the industry as brewery tenant of the Ladywell Tavern in Victoria Road in 1974.
Allowing customers to relax at Royal Arch
And the 70-year-old felt installing the train timetables would make a difference to his customers.
“We get customers who are edgy about train times and delays,” he said.
“They sometimes drink too quickly and for social responsibility, it’s worth having. This takes that element away.
“People can enjoy their refreshments and plan their journey rather than coming in and out checking the train times.”
Mr Stewart explained the process of getting the go-ahead from ScotRail to use the data.
He added: “I got in touch with ScotRail and eventually got to the right department. They said it could be made available.
“It took about two years of work to get it into place. It was a long process but I was quite determined to do it.”
A first in Tayside – will others follow?
Mr Stewart said he believes the Royal Arch to be the only pub in the Dundee area to have the technology installed in the bar.
He hopes others follow in his tracks.
“I think we’re the only pub in Tayside that has anything like this.
“I’d be happy to give someone the same phone numbers if they were looking to install it into their pub.
“It’s open to anyone to get. It just took me a while.”
It was “not prohibitive, but considerable” to install, but has been well received by customers.
“We’re very pleased with it,” he said. “It removes anxieties.”
Adjustments key as energy bills set to soar
Meanwhile, Mr Stewart believes making adjustments will be key to his business surviving the rising cost of energy bills.
He has already cut down the amount is deep fried in the kitchen and is now buying part-cooked potatoes.
“The lightest users are the fridges and the lights. It’s the heating that will be the problem for us.
“We’ve had a wood burning stove ordered for six months but it’s only just being installed.
“It’ll be a case of making adjustments and not having appliances on.”
