An Angus cafe owner has closed her business as she has “had no financial gain whatsoever” from the venture.
Owner of The Hamelt Tearoom in Letham Wendy McCarthy announced the business closure in a Facebook post.
She has owned the Gardyne Street business for the past three and a half years.
While she has loved her time at the tearoom, she has been personally financially supporting it, she writes.
She continues: “This has been one of the hardest decisions to undertake, but I’m afraid the current financial climate has made continuing forward with my business absolutely impossible and therefore I am left with no other choice.
“I have tried every avenue I can to avoid this course of action, but alas, have not prevailed.
“In these horrendously worrying times for us all, I owe it to myself, my wonderful staff and lovely visitors, to be realistic and honest about what the future holds for my business.”
Hamelt Tearoom not last venture
Ms McCarthy thanks her friends, family, team and customers for their support with her business.
She describes her staff as wonderful, hardworking and the best staff ever.
“To you all, our lovely friends, visitors and followers. Without you, we wouldn’t have lasted the testing times from 2019 until now,” she writes.
“I’d like to thank you all from the bottom of my heart for all your love and support shown at the tearoom and at our market stall.
“We shall miss you all so much.”
The cafe owner does also share some positive news, saying that the end of the tearoom does not mean the end for her business.
Ms McCarthy hopes to be trading again soon under a new name and will be selling her bakes at the Arbroath Market.
She writes: “I’ve truly put my heart and soul into every aspect of my business and I’m so proud of what I’ve achieved.
“Here’s hoping things change for the better for small businesses and for everyone in general, to enable the country to normalise and thrive.”
