The World Cup kicks off on Sunday and no doubt football commentators will make frequent references to England’s victory in 1966.
The English team’s success 56 years ago may not be fondly remembered by many Scots, but convenience stores in Tayside and Fife are spreading some World Cup cheer by reducing prices of certain goods back to 1966 levels.
It means a bag of Doritos is 7p instead of £2.19 and a two litre bottle of Pepsi Max or Coke Zero is 8p instead of £1.99.
The offer also includes a bar of Cadbury for 6p, Maynards Sport Mix for 5p and Club biscuits for 6p.
How to shop 1966 prices
The move is an initiative by Dundee-based convenience store delivery app Snappy Shopper. It previously helped shops offer 1p for school lunch items.
The firm’s operations controller David Stewart said: “In the face of a cost of living crisis, we don’t want our loyal customers to miss out on the joys of a World Cup.
“Supporting local retailers and the communities they serve is what Snappy Shopper is all about.”
The offer is only available to people ordering through the Snappy Shopper app, which also has a delivery charge and minimum spend conditions.
Shops taking part in the deal in Tayside and Fife are:
- Booze Express Carnoustie, Carnoustie
- Day Today Express Crieff, Crieff
- Premier Nethergate, Dundee
- Premier News, Food & Wine Plus, Carnoustie
- Sugar Rush Newsagent, St Andrews.
Fahim Ashiq, owner of Premier Cupar, said: “Here in Scotland, 1966 doesn’t always have positive connotations. These prices certainly do.
“Regardless of which team you’re cheering on, it’s always nice to settle down to the football with a few treats.
“With the cost of living crisis, I’m conscious many people will have to cut back on this sort of thing.
“I’m delighted to be able to lend a helping hand in offering these popular items for less.”
The promotion runs until Thursday November 17.
