Heathrow expansion could bring new air routes to Dundee

The multi-billion pound expansion of Heathrow Airport could lead to new flights into Dundee.

Regional operator Flybe has indicated it would look at re-establishing historic links to the city’s airfield if Heathrow’s third runway development is given the go-ahead.

The £14 billion Heathrow proposal secured the backing of the UK Government earlier this month but it still faces a crucial Parliamentary vote.

Meanwhile, a public letter – signed by representatives of 40 regional hubs including Dundee Airport manager Derrick Lang and Inglis Lyon, managing director of the Riverside airfield’s parent group HIAL – has now been released calling for the development to be given the green light.

It states: “As operators of airports, we understand aviation economics and we understand that Heathrow expansion is the right choice for our strategic growth.

“Hub airports are proven to be the most efficient vehicle for capacity growth, and growth more broadly in the aviation sector.”

Business leaders have also provided support for the Heathrow proposals.

Scottish Chambers of Commerce chief executive Liz Cameron, said: “Now is the time for Parliament to demonstrate that the UK is open for business.

“Expanding UK’s aviation capacity by giving the thumbs up for Heathrow’s third runway is critical in boosting our position in the global economy, and will provide much-needed confidence to international investors and our trading allies.

“ Scotland’s business community will look to MPs to ‘green light’ this vital infrastructure project, unlocking economic growth and jobs creation in Scotland and the UK.”
