Angela Williamson offers full range of wedding and prom gowns for hire and sale in Kinrossie
How and why did you start in business?
Many of my friends and family paid for a wedding dress which then stayed unworn in the wardrobe for years.
My own was still there after 38 years although it’s now in the shop!
I dreamt of owning my own shop full of vintage, pre-loved and new dresses for hire or to buy. I believe that no matter what your budget, every girl deserves a beautiful dress for a special occasion.
I also wanted to get the shop up and running so when I retire I have a business to keep me busy and financially independent.
How did you get to where you are?
We have a small bit of land to the rear of our cottage in Kinrossie which provided the perfect spot for a dress shop in the form of a cabin.
Since building the cabin, I have been continuously promoting the business, talking about it, getting its name out there.
I’m not there yet but after two or three years we are beginning to get known.
Loving what you are doing and being passionate about it helps.
Who has helped you along the way?
Family – I couldn’t have got to where I am without them, their encouragement, their assistance at fairs, or simply making the tea for when I come home and helping to empty the car.
Having a good accountant to keep you right and know which forms need to be completed has also been essential.
The advisers at community enterprise support organisation GrowBiz have always been there for me when I have a query about anything, particularly in terms of finance and business rates.
Your biggest mistake?
Thinking everyone would rush to the shop the first day and then being a little disappointed.
It’s taken a while to become known, and for customers and companies to see the quality of the shop and the gowns.
Your greatest achievement?
When people say they’ve seen the shop on social media and comment that say we sell lovely gowns. I just love that.
And of course seeing a beautiful bride on her wedding day with one of my dresses on always gives me a real buzz.
Hopes for the future?
To give up my day job and concentrate on my business.
Do you want to recruit in the future?
Yes, it would be good to have someone to look after the shop when I am at wedding fairs or vice versa – but that is for the future.
What is the hardest thing about running your own business?
Having good time management and ensuring that you make time for family as well. Many evenings I start to do some work on the shop then three hours later realise I’m still working.
