Fife’s five star Clayton Caravan Park hopes to become a top leisure destination as it breaks ground on a £2 million development.
The park’s new leisure complex will feature a swimming pool, spa, sauna, gymnasium and cafe, which will be open to the public.
An outdoor adventure playground and new car parks will also be created as part of the project, which is due to be completed later this year.
Clayton Caravan Park, located six miles west of St Andrews, has been owned and run by the Kennedy family since its inception in 1966.
Managing director Andrew Kennedy said: “It’s going to be a great addition to the park. We hope it will help make Clayton more of a destination for people to come and take their kids for a swim, have a bit of lunch and a play in the outdoor play area.”
Montrose-based Pert Bruce Construction Limited has been appointed as the principal contractor of the project.
Some preparation work for the development has already been done, with Pert Bruce due on site next month.
The leisure centre will add to the current on-site facilities which include a restaurant and bar, soft play area, games room and shop.
Mr Kennedy said that despite Brexit uncertainty the holiday park sector has been resilient, giving the family the confident to make the substantial investment.
“It’s a well-trodden narrative that with the fall in the value of the pound, more people have been holidaying at home, but it’s true,” he said.
“Sales have been very strong.
“We are selling around 35 new holiday homes a year, half a dozen lodges and will sell around 50 pre-owned homes a year.
“The holiday park sector has always been pretty resilient to ups and downs.
“When things are not so great in the economy, people who were going abroad reign back a bit and maybe just take a caravan instead of going abroad.
“If things are good then you’re riding the wave along with everybody else.
“There’s always an element of risk but we have the confidence in the investment.”
There are currently 550 privately owned holiday homes and eight rental properties at Clayton.
The firm has planning permission for a further 90 units, which it hopes to put in place next year.
