Dundee-based glass manufacturer Ravensby returned to profit last year after increasing sales by almost £1 million.

The firm has operated in the city since 1985 and has two purpose-built factories at West Pitkerro Industrial Estate.

It supplies glazing to the public, residential, commercial, historic and medical sectors.

Newly published accounts show sales of £14.3m for the year ending October 31 2018, a rise from £13.4m the previous year.

The firm made pre-tax profits of £186,000 last year against a pre-tax loss of £345,000 in 2017.

In his strategic report, chairman Nicholas Cunningham said the firm had achieved higher commercial glazing sales as well as greater operational efficiency last year.

He said the firm “continues to endeavour to promote sales and develop further diversification in its product range within the construction industry sector”.

“This is coupled to the development or operations within its second manufacturing site which is specifically geared towards supplying the commercial product market,” he added.

“The operating profit is considered satisfactory under all the circumstances and the directors remain confident in their forward outlook for the company and its prospects.”

Ravensby said it ensures the best environmental practices are adopted, particularly in fuel efficiency, pollution control and waste management.

The company employed an average of 156 staff for the financial period.

Mr Cunningham said he anticipated “buoyant” short to medium term demand for the firm.

“The main uncertainties facing the company are the extent to which the national macro-economic climate will affect demand for products directly linked to the company’s area of expertise,” he said.

“Those particular uncertainties involving the construction sector are currently deemed to be of sufficiently reasonable risk by the directors with generally buoyant ongoing demand being anticipated for the short to medium term within the markets pursued.

“The directors remain confident that future growth opportunities exist for its glass products and they will advance to focus on those sectors of opportunity for the foreseeable future.”

Ravensby is part of the Malcolm, Ogilvie & Co Ltd which has had roots in Dundee for more than 160 years.
