Wind power output has shot up in Scotland leading environment campaigners to call for a fresh surge in renewables support.
There was a 15% rise in the power generated by turbines in Scotland in April, compared with the same month last year, according to the WWF Scotland – enough to meet the electricity demands of 79% of Scottish homes. The trend was welcomed by the Scottish Greens leader Patrick Harvie, who is visiting Fife College to meet students training for the renewables industry.
WWF Scotland’s director Lang Banks said the country’s renewable sectors support thousands of jobs and help avoid a million tonnes of carbon dioxide every month.
He said: “If we’re to move to the next level in the global shift to a zero-carbon society then the next Scottish Government must bring forward an energy strategy that ensures Scotland is the first EU nation to have a completely renewable electricity generation system by 2030.”
