An orphaned seal pup found at the shore in Kirkcaldy is old enough to fend for itself, said an animal welfare charity.
Concern was raised about the pup’s welfare after a video was posted on YouTube.
The person who posted the video suggested the mother seal was lying dead half a mile away.
Scottish SPCA confirmed the charity had received a call in relation to the pup.
An animal welfare officer went out to Seafield, where it had been reportedly seen, but the creature could not be found.
However, the organisation said it was a healthy common seal which should be able to thrive on its own.
Scottish SPCA Chief Superintendent Mike Flynn said: “Anyone concerned about a seal pup should call our animal helpline on 03000 999 999 before approaching them.
“This includes seals who appear injured, are found on public beaches or are spotted in unusual places such as non-breeding areas.
“Unfortunately we are often contacted about seal pups who are healthy but have been abandoned by their mothers because someone has disturbed them.”
