VIDEO: British Divers Marine Life Rescue check health of whale spotted in the Forth

Marine wildlife experts say they remain hopeful that a humpback whale seen in the Forth Estuary will make its own way out into the open sea and safety.

The mammal was seen off the coast of Kinghorn earlier this week, sparking concerns that it may be in trouble. More reports of sightings were received on Wednesday.

Experts from British Divers Marine Life Rescue approached the juvenile whale to check its welfare and the group’s Fife co-ordinator, Paul Smith, says there remains every chance the animal is simply lingering in the area before continuing on its normal route.

He said: “We received more reports of sightings on Wednesday.

“However, it’s not uncommon to see them in this area as it is part of their migratory route.”

Mr Smith says concerns would heighten if the whale started to make its way upriver and into the busier shipping routes, but is hopeful that will not happen.

He says the best-case scenario is that the whale heads out to sea — but until the picture is clearer he reminded the public to stay away from the whale to avoid distressing the animal or endangering themselves.

However, if the whale is seen very close to the shore or appears to be in difficulty the BDMLR rescue hotline is available on 01825 765546 during office hours or on 07787 433412 outwith hours.
