A series of new action groups has been launched aimed at farmers who are keen to understand the relationship between carbon, meat production and profit.
Quality Meat Scotland (QMS) is behind the Sustainable Red Meat Action Groups which will have pasture-based livestock production at their core, along with benchmarking farm performance and carbon credentials.
Seven groups will be based across Scotland and each will meet four times a year for a three-year period.
Group members will have the opportunity to visit members’ farms and hear from technical experts on topics such as grazing management, soil health and alternative livestock production systems – allowing them to identify improvements that could be made on their own farms.
Members will also be able to highlight the strengths and weaknesses of their farm and compare them with other group members using benchmarking data.
John Evans, QMS knowledge transfer specialist, encouraged farmers to get involved.
He said: “The opportunity to benchmark, share experiences and learn from other farmers in the programme is set to be a hugely valuable way to help farmers optimise their businesses.”
The first meetings of the groups will be held later this year once lockdown restrictions are eased. Anyone interested can call Mr Evans on 07823 417598, or: jevans@qmscotland.co.uk
