Steam engines, vintage tractors, horses, the latest farming technology and hundreds of ploughmen and women will congregate near York in September for the British national ploughing championships and the world ploughing contest.
Teams are expected from 32 countries from as far afield as the USA, Canada, South Africa, Australia and New Zealand for the ploughing world’s equivalent of the Oscars, and many will bring their own equipment. At stake are two titles, for conventional and reversible ploughing.
In the British championships, competition will be fierce from around 300 competitors from across the country. Their aim will be to represent their country in the 2017 world contest in Kenya.
A central part of the huge 500 acre site, which has been loaned by Hobson Farming Ltd, will showcase trade stands displaying the latest in agricultural machinery and equipment.
The world ploughing competition will take place on September 8-11 and on the evening prior to the main event, a service of dedication and “blessing of the plough” will be held in York Minster attended by all the world ploughmen.
