Two dedicated cookery judges bravely tackled the challenge of tasting nine variations of mince during West Fife Show’s young farmers Ready Steady Country Cook competition.
Teams from Forfar, East Fife, Peeblesshire, Carse of Gowrie, Kinross and two each from Strathearn and Brechin clubs were allocated eight ingredients to produce dishes that would delight judges Sheena Lamont and Helen Forbes.
“We’ve seen a lot of shepherd’s pie and spaghetti bolognaise,” said Ms Lamont.
The two-man teams were judged on hygiene, the balance of the meal, technical skills and teamwork and they faced an additional challenge when the generators failed to provide enough power to fire up the ovens.
“They’re having to make do with hobs alone,” said Scottish Association of Young Farmers Clubs (SAYFC) east area chairman, David Barclay.
“This is the east area elimination round ahead of the top award at the Royal Highland Show so there’s fierce competition.”
