The Shetland pony champion may have been one of the smallest animals in Kirriemuir’s East Muirhead of Logie showground but she walked away with the day’s most prestigious centenary trophy.
Strong commercial cattle classes and a well supported sheep section were among the livestock highlights of the day, but it was the turn of the horse section to win the champion of champions award, and the glory went to pony handler Lisa Wilson from Leys Farm, Muckhart .
Her champion, the filly, Myreton Galaxy has won junior championships in the past but this was her first open win.
In reserve place was the Highland champion from Kim Stretch of Methven, the two-year-old filly, Silver Rose of Roisbheinn who had a reserve championship win at Doune and Dunblane already this season.
Over in the busy sheep sections the interbreed winner was the North Blackface champion, a three-crop ewe from Glenquaich’s Cadogan Estates. She was on her first outing.
Reserve interbreed sheep was the Suffolk champion from Gordon Mackie, Drimmie Farm, Forfar, a ram lamb by Drimmie Glenho and out of a home-bred ewe. He was also on his first show outing.
The cattle interbreed winner had more show experience, having won the junior interbreed championship at last month’s Royal Highland Show. He was the Aberdeen Angus champion, Balmachie Rodger from Carnoustie breeder John Lascelles.
Interbreed judge, Robert Aitkin from Methven described his champion has having “great movement, easy fleshing, length and standing up well on four good legs”.
Taking reserve interbreed place was the Simmental heifer from the Smiths at Drumsleed, Fordoun, Laurencekirk. Their two-year-old heifer, Drumsleed Farina 14 was breed champion at Fettercairn and first in her class at Angus.
The best young handler in the cattle section, and the winner of the McLaren Family cup was Rachel Leslie and in sheep section the winner was Robbie Burke.
Show chairman, Robin Dandie was delighted that the show had attracted good entries in all sections.
“The commercial cattle and sheep sections were particularly well supported, and they’re always a highlight at Kirriemuir. We pride ourselves on that here,” he said.
“We’re also happy to see a good selection of trade stands. The local companies are all very supportive – the main dealers are all here – and that helps make us a real agricultural show.”
