A national promotional drive has been launched to grow grassroots membership of the farmers’ union from its current standing of 8,500.
NFU Scotland president Andrew McCornick appealed for the backing of more of Scotland’s estimated 16,000 farmers in order to boost the organisation’s lobbying power and enable them to fully represent the views of every sector and area of the country.
“Some have fallen out over policy issues, some don’t understand the difference between NFU Mutual and the union, and some are riding on others’ coat tails,” he said. “We are getting recognition for the work we’re doing and we want everyone on board.”
The campaign was launched at Athelstaneford Mains, East Lothian, where potato farmer James Logan was revealed as one of the industry “champions” who will front the recruitment drive.
He said: “I have been a union member for 35 years now and I find it beneficial to have the team on hand to help me, no matter what the situation may be – whether it’s a query with legislation and red tape or what’s happening with Brexit and how it will impact my business.
“We need support from farmers and crofters across Scotland to fully represent the views of those from every sector and corner of the country, and by signing up to NFUS you can have your say.
“I would urge anyone who has ever wondered what the union can do for them to give the team a call today, as you will be surprised with what they can help with and the benefits you will receive.”
Union chief executive Scott Walker said membership had grown in recent years but there is potential for greater engagement by the rest of the industry.
“The strength of our membership gives us the foundation to lobby for the industry on the immediate challenges while we also continue to influence and shape the future for farming and crofting in Scotland,” he said.
