British Transport Police are investigating an early morning tragedy near the Forth Bridge.
A body was discovered at around 7.20am on Monday after officers were alerted to a casualty between Edinburgh Gateway and Inverkeithing.
“British Transport Police were called at 7.22am on Monday July 13 to the Forth Rail Bridge following a report of a casualty near the tracks,” said a BTP spokesman.
“Officers attended, but sadly a person was pronounced dead at the scene.
“Officers remain at the scene and enquiries are currently underway to establish the full circumstances behind the person’s death and how they came to be near the railway.”
Rail services between Edinburgh, Fife and Dundee were disrupted.
A spokesman for ScotRail said: “Services between Edinburgh and Fife, Dundee, Inverness and Aberdeen are subject to delay and alteration while the emergency services attend an incident between Edinburgh Gateway and Inverkeithing.
“We’ve arranged replacement buses to run between Edinburgh Gateway and Inverkeithing, but customers can also travel on selected local Stagecoach East buses with their valid train ticket, as well as on Edinburgh trams.”
