A speeding motorcyclist left police officers “stunned” after he was caught travelling at 120mph in a 60mph zone near Scone Airport on Sunday.

A 36-year-old  man has been charged after being clocked at twice the speed limit on the A94 on the outskirts of the Perthshire village on August 30.

Local Lib Dem councillor Lewis Simpson has called for new speed limits to be introduced on the stretch of road following the incident which officers said could have been “catastrophic”.

Mr Simpson said he wasn’t surprised.

“This one incident is excessive but there has been an awful lot of poor driving on that road in my experience,” he said.

“We require a reduced speed limit and an enforced speed limit.

“It’s an area that’s been brought to brought to my attention many times by local residents. There’s school kids walking up and down that road, pedestrians and old men on bikes.

“I’ve experienced some terrible driving there.”

Officers said the motorcyclist’s actions were “idiocy”.

Inspector Greg Burns of Tayside’s Roads Policing Unit said: “It’s disappointing that, on a weekend where the vast majority of motorcyclists we have met have been riding safely and responsibly, idiocy like this takes place.

“One minor misjudgement – a pothole, an encounter with wildlife running on the road – and the results of speeding like this can be catastrophic.

“Riding and driving at ridiculous speeds gives decent motorists a bad name, and will not be tolerated.”

On the same day three motorcyclists were involved in a crash with a Range Rover near the border between Perthshire and Stirlingshire resulting in a 32-year-old man being taken to hospital with serious injuries.

It happened at around 6pm on the A85 at Lochearnhead, near the Glen Ogle Viaduct.

The rider of one of the motorbikes, was taken to the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital.

There were no other serious injuries.

The road was closed for around nine hours to allow officers to carry out their investigations.

Sergeant David Marr, of Stirling Road Policing, said: “One man has sustained serious injuries as a result of this crash and we are looking for the public’s help to establish the full circumstances surrounding the incident.

“Thankfully there were no other serious injuries to those involved and I would ask if anyone has any information that t

“Although this took place in a rural area, the road is often busy with other motorists who may have witnessed the crash.”
