Headaches for motorists as roadworks begin across Dundee

Buses are being diverted from Perth Road.

Motorists in Dundee face a frustrating July as roadworks begins on major routes around the city.

In the West End, drivers are set for eight weeks of disruption as Scottish Water starts improvement works on Perth Road.

And there will be more delays at the Five Ways circle on Strathmartine Road as resurfacing work, scheduled to last two weeks, begins.

In addition, work to install traffic calming measures to enforce the new 20mph speed limit on Harestane Road also starts this week.

Vehicles will only be allowed to travel in one direction on Perth Road while Scottish Water starts its £5 million programme of pipe upgrades in the West End.

The road will be closed eastbound between Blackness Avenue and Nethergate for eight weeks.

There will be further disruption in the city centre at Marketgait and South Ward Road.

The nearside northbound lane on Marketgait at Ward Road will be closed while BT carries out cabling work.

And South Ward Road will be closed at Fat Sam’s because of sewer connection work.

Both sets of works are expected to be completed within a week.

At the Fiveways Roundabout, Strathmartine Road will be closed between Strathmore Avenue and Canning Street for two weeks while resurfacing works take place.

Diversions will be put in place while the work – part of the city’s rolling maintenance programme – is ongoing.

At Harestane Road, the council is creating four “raised table” areas and three “build outs” to slow traffic before the new Sidlaw View Primary School opens in August.

Will Dawson, convener of the city development committee, said: “We take our responsibility towards parents and pupils of the new school seriously and as with every other one in the city there will be an increase in the amount of traffic at the beginning and end of the day.

“But these new measures are being put in place to reduce the speed of vehicles at all times so that everyone using the street for whatever reason can do so safely.

“I will ensure that once the school is opened that our parking attendants make periodic visits to ensure that the new rules are being followed and to offer any help that drivers may need with the chances.”
