A Stagecoach driver has been praised for his “commendable” and “unflappable” conduct after a 74-year-old woman collapsed in a bus shelter in Arbroath on Thursday.
The young driver was already late on his round when the incident happened.
His bus had broken down and he had to wait for a replacement to be sent out.
Passenger Valerie Laing was waiting at the stop for the local bus and decided to keep waiting as it was a nice day.
She was eventually picked up at East Muirlands Road.
The bus then turned into the stop at Bloomfield Road where a group of passengers were huddled over an elderly woman who had collapsed.
Mrs Laing said the bus driver immediately stopped the bus and called 999 for an ambulance.
“There were four or five people around her when we got to the stop,” she said.
“He called for an ambulance and got out to see if the woman was okay.
“He was speaking to the operator and stayed on his phone until the ambulance arrived.
“She was drifting in and out of consciousness but seemed to have come round a bit more by the time she was taken away in the ambulance.
“The young lad had already had to wait on a replacement bus and this happened just after he was back on his way again.
“Drivers often come in for criticism but he was commendable and unflappable.”
Stagecoach have been approached for comment.
