Train services through Fife between Dundee and Edinburgh were disrupted on Monday morning due to staffing problems.
It is understood the problems started following an incident involving a Dundee to Edinburgh train, with the train terminating at Leuchars, and services throughout the morning were subsequently affected.
Alternative transport was put in place, although ScotRail remained relatively tight-lipped when pressed about the nature of the incident.
It is understood that British Transport Police were not involved, and no-one was injured, prompting speculation that the delays were caused by an internal ScotRail issue.
A ScotRail spokeswoman said in a statement: “We can confirm that the 9.41 Dundee-Edinburgh service terminated at Leuchars station.
“Customers were provided with coach transport to enable them to continue their journeys.
“We remind all customers to retain their travel tickets in order to make a claim through our Delay Repay scheme.”
ScotRail’s Twitter account on social media had earlier confirmed services would be delayed “due to a shortage of train crew”.
Trains started running normally again between Aberdeen and Edinburgh and Dundee and Edinburgh before noon.
