The street where a Dundee woman sustained fatal injuries after being hit by a bus had been at the centre of a campaign to reduce speed limits to 20mph.
Police confirmed the 49-year-old woman involved in the collision on the city’s Johnston Avenue has died.
She suffered a severe head injury when she was hit by an Xplore Dundee service around 11am on Thursday.
A spokesperson for Police Scotland said the woman had died from her injuries later the same day.
Her name has not yet been released.
Councillor Jimmy Black, who represents the area, said he was supportive of plans to introduce lower speed limits to the street.
“It is a tragic accident. Road deaths are unusual in Dundee – we have a reasonably good record on that. But this still happened and if there is anything we can do to design out danger from our roads then we should.
“Crossing the roads in that area can be quite difficult. Roundabouts, or circles, there are particularly difficult for pedestrians and cyclists. I would do away with them all, but that is a matter for our transport department to decide.
“I am a very strong supporter that speeds in Dundee should be reduced to 20mph on all residential routes, and in particular Johnston Avenue. There has been a long campaign there to reduce the limit to 20mph.
“It is supported by the vast majority of residents on Johnston Avenue.”
“I think that would be very helpful in preventing any further tragedies. Whether it would have been a factor in this incident, I do not know.
“There is a petition signed by almost all the householders asking for 20mph to be imposed. Most of the householders have also replied to a consultation on the subject and have been in favour of reducing the speed limit.”
A Dundee City Council spokesperson said: “Dundee City Council undertook a city wide consultation on the possible introduction of 20mph speed limit zones in residential areas of Dundee.
“Responses to that consultation are being collated and analysed and a detailed report will be brought to the city development committee by the end of the year.”
An Xplore Dundee spokeswoman said: “Our thoughts are with the family and friends of the woman who has lost her life in this incident.
“We’re offering our support to them and to the driver involved.
“We are working closely with the police as they continue their investigation.”
Police Scotland has confirmed enquiries into the full set of circumstances of the incident are ongoing and appealed for anyone who may have information that could assist officers with their enquiries to contact Tayside Division on 101.
A report has been submitted to the Procurator Fiscal.
