Local parents are calling for the route to Kirkcaldy North Primary School to be made safer for children.
They fear increased traffic to and from nearby Victoria Hospital has made the route across Adamson Avenue and Wilson Avenue dangerous for youngsters.
Local mum Lisa Connelly has written to Fife Council transportation boss Ken Gourlay calling for road safety to be improved in the area as a matter of urgency.
She said: “We’ve had concerns about the roads in our area for the last year or so.
“What we’ve found is that the volume of traffic has increased greatly since the hospital has increased in size.
“A lot of other parents share these concerns.”
Ms Connolly, who has two girls aged eight and 10 at Kirkcaldy North Primary, said parents would like to see pedestrian crossings installed at both Adamson Avenue and Wilson Avenue.
As well as being a route to school for local children, the roads are also at either side of a playpark.
Local parents have been in touch with Councillor Judy Hamilton, who has backed their calls for the route to the school to be made safer.
Mrs Hamilton said the council’s transportation department was treating road safety improvements in the area as high priority.
However, the installation of crossings at the two streets in question has not been factored in to this year’s budget.
“Although it’s high priority, two other areas are considered to be more important,” said Ms Connolly.
“It looks like they are considering doing something in 2018 to 2019.
“We feel the need to make a stand and be more vocal about it because I don’t think anything is going to be done fast.
“Kids as young as five are using the route.
“It’s a main bus route, there are lorries making deliveries and there’s been an increase in traffic.
“We feel it’s becoming unsafe.”
Mrs Hamilton said: “Buses have started to go to the hospital along this route, making it very busy. There’s also a shop, where there are often deliveries.
“Adding to that is the school run.
“Transportation are saying something will be done in future years, but we want something done now, because it’s about safer routes to schools.”
