The country’s cycling body has rewarded Abertay University in recognition for its willingness to encourage employees to commute to work on a bike.
Cycling Scotland presented the institution with its cycle-friendly certificate, following an inspection last month.
As well as encouraging staff to use a bike to travel to work, Abertay has provided a drying room where cyclists can leave kit if they are caught out in inclement weather on their morning commute. Free showers are also available for staff.
Additionally, cycle lanes have been painted on the tarmac of the staff car park, leading from the entrance to the cycle rack, with funding provided from the sustainable travel grant.
Iain Stewart, a teaching fellow at Abertay, cycles 11 miles from Carnoustie most days.
He said: “I have cycled in for over a year. I’ve lost weight and do it to keep fit and healthy.
“I have saved a fair few quid not taking the car or train into work and I don’t miss the stressful car commute or packed train.”
Sharon Jeffrey, Abertay occupational health adviser, said: “We are delighted to once again receive this award.
“So much hard work has gone into making cycling to work at Abertay as accessible and convenient for our staff as possible.”
The award lasts for three years, after which the university will be reassessed.
