A Letham resident backed calls for a speed reduction to be imposed on a rural road, then warned “the idiots would just ignore it”.
Mrs Isobel Motion, 65, described those speeding from Forfar to Letham through Dunnichen as “fools” and said the section of road was notorious for dangerous driving.
Mrs Motion was speaking after Arbroath West, Letham and Friockheim Liberal Democrat Richard Moore called for the current 60mph speed limit to be cut to 40mph at Dunnichen.
Mr Moore has raised the issue with Angus Council officers following a spate of crashes at the blackspot over many years, which shows no sign of easing.
Dunnichen, between Letham and Forfar, contains four junctions very close together, with poor sight lines and tight bends.
Mrs Motion said: “Putting up 40mph signs is not fruitless but something has to be done to remind the fools.
“I live in Letham and that section of road for idiot drivers is dangerous. The road is narrow they speed over the white line and they are going far too fast to control the vehicle.
“Coming back from Forfar to Letham you have to cut back your speed at that section of road and there is no need to accelerate.”
The road through Dunnichen is tricky and walls around the long bend have been knocked down by cars six times.
One of the worst happened earlier this year when a driver was cut free by firefighters after his vehicle overturned near Braefoot Cottage following a crash in January.
Mrs Motion said: “It’s the usual story – even if the speed was reduced the idiots would just ignore it.”
She said there were “too many fools on the road these days” and drivers were often failing to use common sense.
Angus Council said roads officers are now investigating the matter following correspondence from Mr Moore.
Last year the issue of speeding motorists was included in the Arbroath West and Letham multi-member ward plan.
The policing plan at the time stated: “You have informed us of concerns regarding speeding motorists, particularly in rural areas of Angus and those who drive in a dangerous, inconsiderate and anti-social manner.”
