British Transport Police have launched an investigation into the theft of signalling cable which caused rail chaos across Fife, Dundee and Perth.
In the region of 50ft of valuable cable was stolen from the rail line between Inverkeithing and North Queensferry.
The theft caused widespread disruption on Monday afternoon, with more than 30 trains cancelled as a result of signalling failure.
A spokesperson for BTP said detectives were still trying to ascertain exactly how much cable was taken.
And the force appealed for witnesses who may be able to help them track down those responsible.
The spokesperson said: “Detectives from British Transport Police are investigating the theft of signalling cable from the railway yesterday.
“We were called to the line between North Queenferry and Inverkeithing shortly before 2pm.
“Detectives continue to assess how much cable was taken and ask anyone with any information to get in touch.
“It is believed the cable may have been damaged and taken earlier in the day. If you were in the area yesterday morning and witnesses any persons or vehicles acting suspiciously then please get in touch.
“There was significant delays to train services whilst essential repairs were made to the signalling.
