A lorry fire brought traffic to a standstill on the M90 on Wednesday evening and left motorists stuck for hours in a heavy queue of vehicles.
The incident – which occurred two miles north of Kinross near Glenfarg just before 6pm – caused havoc.
Police closed off the M90 in both directions as smoke billowed across both carriageways and urged the public to “avoid the area” as the drama unfolded.
Traffic signs also warned of the carriageway closure but heavy queues built up quickly.
Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus tackled the blaze using two hosereels.
Nobody was hurt.
The fire was extinguished by 7pm and the northbound carriageway was reopened by police.
But the southbound lane still remained closed several hours afterwards.
A gritter was called to clear up fuel which had spilled onto the carriageway.
Police were putting in place a rolling roadblock while it was gritted.
One motorist said: “We’re just not moving anywhere.”
