The heavy vehicle, which had an L-plate attached, became wedged under the bridge in Elgin Street at around 1.25pm on Thursday. Police confirmed that nobody was injured in the incident. Network Rail said the bridge sustained only superficial damage after engineers were called out to check the structure. The bridge carries a freight line which is mostly out of use and rail services were not affected. Traffic was diverted from the scene, with road closures at Grange Road, Primrose Lane and Nethertown Broad Street, while the lorry was recovered.
