‘Gridlock’ on Dundee’s streets as waterfront office block works get under way

Motorists were hit by “gridlock” as particularly heavy traffic affected Dundee’s streets on Wednesday morning.

Congestion was worse then normal across the city with the partial closure of a waterfront road to allow for the construction of a controversial new office block blamed by motorists.

One local described “gridlock” on the Arbroath and Broughty Ferry roads, while there was also reports of heavy traffic on Greendykes Road, the Scott Fyffe Roundabout and in the Downfield area.

Twenty minute waits were reported on Blackscroft and Dock Street.

Journeys from Broughty Ferry to Dundee are reported to have taken between 45 minutes and an hour.

Police said the problems were down to the “sheer weight of traffic”.

However a lane closure on South Union Street is being blamed for the traffic issues.

The southbound restriction between Thomson Avenue and Riverside Esplanade is set to last for two weeks to allow for “site development enabling works” associated with a new waterfront office block.

Work on the controversial ÂŁ15.5million project, part of the area’s ÂŁ1 billion redevelopment, started on Monday and are expected to be finished by February 2019.

Bus firm Xplore Dundee has apologised to its customers after experiencing delays to services.

The company tweeted: “Long traffic queues on approach to the East Port are tailing back up Blackscroft, impacting movement on Broughty Ferry Road and Albert Street/Arbroath Road.

“We apologise for any delays experienced on services 5 | 9/10 | 15 | 22 | 28/29 | 32/33.”

One woman who drove into Dundee from Monikie said the journey took her almost an hour.

She added: “It was just mental, I don’t know why it was like that. The queue was at Scott Fyffe Roundabout going into Dundee, I turned around and went down Pitkerro Road.”

More to follow.
