Dundee City Council must ensure one of the main routes into the city can cope with the expected influx of visitors when the V&A opens, a leading councillor has warned.
The City Engineer has blamed a “dip” in the road on Riverside Drive for delays to the construction of a flood wall at the site.
It follows concern about subsidence on the road in 2012 and resurfacing works carried out a couple of years later.
However, a large pothole had to be repaired on the road earlier this month and West End Liberal Democrat councillor Fraser Macpherson is now demanding assurances that the road, the main route into the waterfront from the west, will be able to cope with an expected increase in traffic later this year.
Mr Macpherson said: “I will be raising the issue with the head of roads and transportation.
“I have had a few complaints about the quality of the road.
“It is important with the V&A opening and the new railway station that we have quality roads and infrastructure leading to it,
“This will be the main road for people coming to Dundee from the south and the west. It’s important it is in good condition.”
Roadworks have been taking place on Riverside Drive for a number of months and are due to come to an end over the next couple of weeks.
Lynne Short, SNP convener of Dundee City Council’s city development committee, said: “The opening of the V&A in September, along with other major events in the calendar for this year, like the two gigs already confirmed for Slessor Gardens, will attract significant numbers of visitors to Dundee.
“We will provide them with a warm and friendly welcome and ensure that the city is accessible no matter which form of transport they choose to get here and use while they are here.
“However no one can imagine that in a city like ours, which is the scene of so much positive development and beneficial change, there will be no work going on to the roads network or at sites in the waterfront and other parts of Dundee for the foreseeable future.
“Any disruption that this work may cause will be kept to a minimum.”
