MSP backs bid to save “vital” Dundee and Angus bus route

Protesters say axing the 75 would leave passengers, including the elderly, having to make their way up the hilly Grange Road in Monifieth on foot.

A North East MSP has backed a campaign to save a “vital” local bus service in Dundee and Angus.

Mike Rumbles said Stagecoach should think again about its decision to axe the 75 service between Dundee and Monifieth, warning that if it is removed, some residents could be left without any suitable transport links on the route.

Mr Rumbles confirmed he had also written to transport minister Humza Yousaf calling for action from the Scottish Government to assist local councils in saving key bus links across the region.

“The 75 service proves a vital lifeline for many local people and will leave some in the community without a decent service if Stagecoach axes it,” he said.

“The Scottish Government should be supporting councils and local authorities to stop commercial operators just taking an axe to vital local bus services.”

The 75, which runs from Dundee to Ethiebeaton Park, could be scrapped as early as May 14 if the proposals go through.

Joan Murray, 68, of Grange Lane, Monifieth, who uses the service two or three times a week, insisted it would be a “great loss” for the local community.

She said: “It’s the only bus that takes the low road so really, it’s the only service I have. I was talking to other passengers on Monday and most of them had no idea this was happening.

“There are a lot of old age pensioners in the community who rely on it so this really does affect a lot of people.”

Broughty Ferry councillor Craig Duncan said it was “ridiculous” for Stagecoach to claim the service is no longer needed.

“I will be doing everything in my power to keep the service up and running and I encourage everyone who uses the route to contact Stagecoach and their local council to express their views,” he said.

Douglas Robertson, commercial director for Stagecoach East Scotland, said a number of changes were being considered in the area as part of “ongoing network reviews”.

He added: “We have found usage of these journeys is continually very low, as much of the route is covered by other, more frequent services, 73/73A and 39.

“These potential revisions are still in the consultation stage and customers can provide their feedback on the proposals at stagecoachbus.com until March 23.”
