The Scottish Greens have backed a policy scrapping fares for public transport.
Members voted in favour of a motion committing the party to “fare-free access” during its conference in Glasgow on Sunday.
John Finnie, the Green MSP, said free bus, train and tram travel for all is a long term goal.
“Extending subsidised fares to widen access makes sense as we work toward a goal of a public transport system that like other public services is free at the point of need,” he added.
Earlier, co-leader Patrick Harvie named local tax reform as the price of Green support for an SNP Budget, which under his party’s model would lead to tax rises.
