The owner of a struggling sandwich shop in Fife said cutting the hours of staff will save workers from being made redundant.
Pret A Manger, which has an outlet in Market Street in St Andrews, has asked employees to work fewer hours.
Staff will work 20% less on average as trade through its shops remains well pre-Covid levels.
“Our biggest priority is to do everything we can to save jobs,” a Pret spokesperson said.
“With footfall in our shops still significantly below normal levels, we have had to review the hours team members are contracted to work each week – although of course we hope to increase these hours as trade improves.
“By making these changes we are able to save a large number of roles.”
Last month Pret announced it was to permanently shut 30 of its stores after sales slowed. Around 1,000 jobs will be lost across the business as a result of the restructure.
Trade across the country is understood to be down by 65% since lockdown rules came into force in late March.
The Market Street branch reopened at the start of June along with more than 300 other locations.
The Fife branch is not one of the shops selected to close – but the list does include sites in Edinburgh and Glasgow.
Pret said 339 of its 410 UK shops have so far reopened with reduced opening hours.
The firm runs 550 outlets with 13,000 staff globally, including 8,000 people in the UK.
Pret is also in talks with landlords about reducing its rent bill.
