A major convenience store group has said it was a ‘difficult decision’ to sell one of its Angus shops.
The Co-op has confirmed it has sold its shop at Milton Mill in Monifieth with current staff transferred to the new operator, understood to be Nisa.
A spokesperson said: “The Co-op is moving forward with a clear purpose and momentum and while this often involves opening new stores, we also have to take difficult decisions.
“It has been agreed to sell our store in Monifieth – Milton Mill.
“The well-being of our colleagues is a number one priority and we are pleased to confirm that they have the opportunity to transfer to the new operator under TUPE arrangements, and are being fully supported throughout the sale.
“We would like to thank the community for its support over the years.”
Nisa would not comment on its plans for the Monifieth shop, which continues to trade.
A spokesman said Nisa partners benefit from the wholesaler’s buying and distribution operation but can chose to trade under their own name or the Nisa brand.
Nisa’s retail arm was purchased by the Co-op in 2018 but they continue to run as separate companies.
The Co-op signs at the Mortimer Drive shop have been removed but there are no new signs in their place.
Co-op plans to open or extend 65 stores in the coming months under a multi-million pound investment programme which will create up to 1,000 new jobs.
The programme includes more than £2 million of upgrades to supermarkets in Perth, Crieff and Kirkcaldy which will be completed by the end of the year.
Last month the convenience retailer also relaunched its Brechin store after a £1.4m investment which created two jobs.
