If the quiz question was: “Who was the former Dundee Violet junior player who scored a hat-trick on his debut for the Scotland international team?”, would you be able to answer that one?
That was the query put to me by Monifieth’s Ally McLeish, and I replied: “Henry Morris”.
In fact, this is a very decent tale.
Morris spent around six seasons with Violet before being snapped up by East Fife.
Morris was part of the Methil side which won the old Scottish Second Division in 1946-47 and won the League Cup the same season.
He scored around 60 goals in that campaign.
In fact, stats I saw revealed he netted around a century of goals in his 120-odd games for the Fifers.
In 1949, Scotland played their very first World Cup qualifying match when they took on Northern Ireland in Belfast, winning 8-2.
Morris made his international debut in that match alongside Bayview team-mate George Aitken, and responded to type with a hat-trick. He scored after just two minutes, then pitched in with another two late in the game.
Bizarrely, this would be his only international appearance, being left out for the next game against Wales at Hampden five weeks later, and never called up again.
Scotland lined up – Jimmy Cowan (Morton); George Young (Rangers) (capt), Sammy Cox (Rangers); Bobby Evans (Celtic), Willie Woodburn (Rangers), George Aitken (East Fife); Willie Waddell (Rangers), James Mason (Third Lanark), Henry Morris (East Fife), Billy Steele (Derby County), Lawrie Reilly (Hibs).
After he left East Fife in 1952, he had brief spells with Dundee United and Irish side Portadown.
