Broughty United AFC supremo Ally Martin was able to help with our recent query regarding Jim Henry and the Black Trophy.
Said Ally: “The Black Trophy was presented by the family of James Black, of Forfar, in 1952 to the Scottish Amateur Football Association.
“It was initially used as a North of Tay area Youth competition and then, in season 1955-56, competed for by the Youth Leagues and U/18s within the amateur associations/leagues.
“Mr Black was a member of Forfar Athletic FC between 1885 and 1951 and of the SFA from 1904 until 1951.
“When all Youth football was transferred to the SFA in 1998-99, the competition was discontinued.”
Ally, who has served on local, regional and national committees for many years, continued: “Forfar & District AFA won the competition in 1958-59 and Angus AFA were triumphant in 1961-62, 1965-66 and 1969-70.
“I am sure the Angus AFA comprised a select of players whose amateur teams competed within the county of Angus, so would include Dundee.”
I can clear up that last bit of info from Ally as the Angus Amateur FA at that time was the main body for youth teams in Dundee and the surrounding area, which included teams from Arbroath, Forfar, Birkhill, Strathmartine, &c, during my time with Butterburn YC and Lochee BC in the late 1960s.
Jim Henry was part of the 65-66 team, while I have a medal as a winner with the 69-70 side.
