Blether: Dundee United pipped East Fife for striker Kenny Dick – by signing him in his dad’s house

Kenny Dick reads this column and I reckon he may be tickled with this.

While perusing through files, I came across one which highlighted his transfer from Forfar Athletic to Dundee United.

Dundonian Kenny was with St Joseph’s juniors when his goal- scoring exploits made the Loons swoop for the centre-forward’s signature two years previously.

He was 22 when he signed for United in November 1964.

Kenny was part-time with Forfar – working as a sanitary inspector with Dundee Corporation – but would go full-time at Tannadice.

The signing took place in his father’s house, and Kenny said afterwards: “I’m really delighted at how things have worked out.

“I’ve always fancied the idea of becoming a full-time player.

“United’s move for me tonight was a real surprise.

“I knew nothing about it until Jerry Kerr arrived at Station Park.”

The file also stated that Dick joining United was a disappointment for East Fife boss Jimmy Bonthrone, who already had an offer in for the player.
