BLETHER: Like Rangers, Dundee signed two players of the same surname within days

I told recently of Rangers signing two players called Smith with days of each other in 1966.

The Ibrox club got the signatures of Dunfermline’s Alex and Aberdeen’s Dave in August of that year.

I remarked this was a very unusual event.

But a Dundee fan reckoned his club did exactly the same earlier in that year.

Said Tom McDonald: “I read your recent story of the two Smiths signing for Rangers within days of each other.

“You’ve told before that you are a Dundee fan, so you have missed that this also happened to us that same year.

“I’m sure that, not long after Sammy Wilson joined Dundee, they went out and signed namesake Bobby.”

And Tom is correct.

On March 1, 1966, Northern Ireland internationalist striker Sammy Wilson (27) signed for Bobby Ancell’s Dark Blues from Falkirk.

The fee was reckoned to be around £15,000, around double the amount Wilson cost the Bairns when he joined them from Coleraine over two years previously.

Around a week later, Cowdenbeath right-back Bobby Wilson was also a Dens Parker.

Wilson had been at Central Park for over four years since signing from junior side Dundonald Bluebell.
