Two different former Dundee junior footballers with the same name featured recently in this column.
“An interesting and enjoyable article on the two Alec Sharps who played Dundee Junior football,” opened Rob Boag.
“The article jabbed two fragments of my memory.
“There is a third Alec Sharp who played pre-war Dundee junior football before turning professional.
“Some years ago – it could easily be 10 years ago – BwB published an article about a lad named Sharp who came to visit you at the DC Thomson offices.
“It was Alec Sharp’s brother (the Johnnies Alec Sharp,) and he came with a portfolio of his dad – Alec Sharp Sr.
“The portfolio was a record of his dad’s career and accomplishments in professional pre WWII football with English clubs and in Dundee junior football.
“I hope there are descendants of Alec Sharp Sr who follow BwB and can refresh our memories of a very talented Dundee football player.”
Rob, from Canada, continued: “The other jab from the past was a memory of one of my visits to Frankie Davie’s Lochee pub – circa 1957.
“In this sports pantheon, there was a clique of sportsmen, ex-football and ex-boxers who were a Wikipedia on Dundee sports.
“No quarter was given in this exclusive circle.
“One evening, the topic was Dundee juniors who had turned professional and how successful their careers were.
“The name Alec Sharp arose, that caught my attention – Alec Sharp Jr was a school pal.
“There was a nod of unanimous approval, of unanimous acceptance that Alec Sharp Sr was a class act, a class player.
“This declaration from Frankie Davie’s sports intelligentsia impressed me at that time. It lodged itself.”
