Hibs fan Ron Martin said he “loved” Rob Boag’s story, and agreed with his assertion that he, along with fellow-Easter Road director of the time Hugh Shaw, should be inducted into the SFA Hall of Fame.
He opened: “I loved Rob Boag’s story about Harry Swan, Hugh Shaw and the Famous Five.
“In the early 1930s, he saved Hibs from going under. The club had just been relegated and were in severe financial difficulties and Swan — Leith born and bred — stepped in.
“He was a local baker and, after a couple of years of ‘toing-and-froing’ with the board, he was eventually elected chairman and would serve on the board for around 30 years. He produced a blueprint for the club and admitted it could take many years to come to fruition.
“But it did — and European football and installing floodlights were some of his ground-breaking initiatives.
Ron, from Carnoustie, continued: “He appointed Willie McCartney as team manager, and he would go on to unearth the Famous Five of Smith, Johnstone, Reilly, Turnbull and Ormond on to the Scottish scene.
“Massive crowds attended home games at Easter Road and several league titles were won. He was also president of the SFA for a few years, but, like many before and after him, struggled to get ideas for the national game implemented.”
