Blether: When ‘Tarzan’ raced a clown at Arbroath outdoor swimming pool

We haven’t had any information from readers about Andy Walker’s insistence that Tarzan film star Johnny Weissmuller came to Arbroath outdoor swimming pool in the summer of 1950.

His story was highlighted on these pages on May 14.

Unperturbed, Andy has been trying to dig out further confirmation himself.

He opened: “Just a wee bit of information that came my way.

“The programme that day at the Arbroath pool included a race between Johnny Weissmuller and a swimmer dressed as a clown.

“They were to race the full length of the pool. As the race began, the clown had a storming start and was soon showing a distance from ‘Tarzan’.

“On and on, the clown raced away.

“Inside the last 10, he was tiring and Tarzan was gaining rapidly and, as always, the star always wins.

“The applause for the clown was tremendous for such a valiant effort.

“No-one knows the identity of this clown, but what was revealed later was that he was helped by being pulled along by an underwater cable.

“It is a fact that Weissmuller’s film career was on the wane.

“His tour of Britain might have been part of a health promotion to get the population to think ‘fitness’.

“Back then, celebrities in promotions were used to help promote all sorts of ideas — something very popular today.

“Meanwhile, I hope I have the strength to finish this second kebab!”
