Blether: A fast Ford Capri to see Dundee United play Manchester United at Old Trafford

In 1984, Dundee United were drawn against Manchester United in the Uefa Cup.

Like the Barcelona games the Tangerines played in, the ties caught the imagination of the Tayside footballing public.

Fans clamoured for tickets to see the Red Devils at Tannadice Park.

I was one, and, even as a Dundee fan, I also attended the first leg at Old Trafford.

I went to the away game in the company of United fans Kirkie Jack, Dave Guthrie and Jimmy Myles, who was driving.

Jimmy has always liked nice cars and, if I remember correctly, his car of that moment was a sporty Capri.

I bring up this game because Billy Milne, of Downfield, asked me if Manchester United played the same starting XI in both games.

The answer is no.

Norman Whiteside and Jesper Olsen were in from the start at Old Trafford, but were substitutes for the second leg at Tannadice.

Frank Stapleton and Arnold Muhren were the players who replaced them.

Paul Hegarty and Paul Sturrock scored for the Tangerines in the 2-2 draw, with Bryan Robson and a Gordon Strachan penalty replying for the hosts.

Hegarty was on target again at Tannadice for United, along with Davie Dodds, but the English side won 3-2 and progressed to the next round thanks to strikes from Mark Hughes, Muhren and a Gary McGinnis own goal.

The teams were . . .

Manchester United (first leg) — Bailey; Gidman, Albiston; Moses, McQueen, Duxbury; Robson, Strachan, Hughes, Whiteside, Olsen. Subs — Muhren, Pears, McGrath, Stapleton, Brazil.

Dundee United (first leg) — McAlpine; Malpas, Holt; Gough, Hegarty, Narey; Bannon, Dodds, Kirkwood, Sturrock, Beedie. Subs — Beaumont, Coyne, McGinnis, Munro, Thomson.

Dundee United (second leg) — McAlpine; Malpas, Holt; Gough, Hegarty, Narey; Bannon, McGinnis, Kirkwood (Taylor), Sturrock, Dodds. Subs — Beedie, Beaumont, Coyne, Taylor, Thomson.

Manchester United (second leg) — Bailey; Gidman, Albiston; Moses, McQueen, Duxbury; Robson, Strachan, Hughes, Stapleton, Muhren. Subs — Whiteside, Olsen, Brazil, Blackmore, Wealands.
