BLETHER: Tommy Gemmell signed another McCormack for Dundee
ByJohn Brown
Danny Watson, of Arbroath Road, Dundee, said he enjoyed reading recent tales of former Dundee defender, coach and manager John McCormack.
However, the lifelong Dee fan remembers another McCormack at Dens in the late 1970s.
Dan said: “I can’t remember the player’s first name, but I distinctly remember Tommy Gemmell parading him.”
Roy McCormack was a former Dumbarton striker who emigrated to Australia.
There, he played under Lisbon Lion and former Dundee coach Willie Wallace at the Apal club.
The six-foot-plus striker initially came to Dens in February 1978 on a month’s loan and was then signed until the end of the season.
He didn’t start any first-team games for the Dark Blues but came on as a substitute three times against Kilmarnock (h, 5-2), Arbroath (h, 2-0) and Alloa (a, 5-1).
To be fair to the player, he joined Dundee at a time when they were going head-to-toe with Morton and Hearts at the top of the First Division.
Since he signed, the Dark Blues lost just once in their last 13 league matches and were pipped for promotion by one point.
After he left Dens, he played for Airdrie and East Stirling.
