Maureen Bissett sent in a photo of St Joseph’s JFC when they won the Forfarshire Cup against Lochee Harp at Dens Park in season 1928-29.
Mostly about her uncle James Scott, and his cousins Owen Rodgers and Pat Casciani, it was featured in our December 2 edition.
Maureen, who stays in Dryburgh Gardens in Dundee, got in touch again with some more information.
“My uncle was injured for that match and that is why he was not in a strip in the photo,” she opened.
“Along with Pat and Owen, they all came from the ‘Burn’ — 69 Brook Street. Jim and Owen then moved to Temple Lane.
“Pat moved to the Overgate, above Greenhills, as his father was janitor of St Andrews RC school, which they all attended.”
Maureen continued: “Jim and Pat worked in the Caledon Shipyard during the war. Owen went to live in Coventry, working in the ‘munitions’. He stayed on in the city after the war, working for the Standard Motor Company.
“Jim and Pat also went on to play for Harp, with Pat also playing for East Fife for a spell.
“Owen played for Shamrock, who were run by another family member Barney Boylan.
“Barney later passed on the reins to his son Pat.
“Football has always been a part of our family.”
Concluding, Maureen offered: “Some time ago, you had an article about Tommy Rodgers, who only had one arm due to an accident as a child. He was Owen’s son.
“The football theme still continues in the family as my great nephew is Lewis Toshney, now with Dundee United.”
The St Joseph’s photo continues to provoke comment and the coming weeks will see another few articles on this subject.
