Blether: Did Dundee trialist Kenny Cameron hit a hat-trick in a ‘wee derby’ – or not?

Blether: Did Dundee trialist Kenny Cameron hit a hat-trick in a ‘wee derby’ – or not?

Dundee United archivist Andy Boyd is trying to confirm a goalscorer from a reserve game from the 1960s.

“The following is a report from the reserve derby, which featured in The Courier the following day – Thursday, January 11, 1962.

“Under the heading ‘Wee derby a real thriller’, Dundee reserves beat visiting Dundee United reserves 5-3.”

A feast of goals and plenty good football gave a 1,500 crowd plenty to shout about in the reserve match between Dundee and United at Dens Park last night.

The game got off to a sensational start.

Pat Liney, last-minute deputy for flu victim Cameron, blocked a rocket shot. The ball broke to McDonald, who whipped it into the net.

A minute later, Dundee were level, Mackle scoring with a low drive.

After 21 minutes, McGeachie flicked a nice cross to Waddell. The ball hit Davie and fell into the net.

In 35 minutes, Newman, the trialist centre, put Dundee two ahead.

The second half start was as sensational as the first, with another two goals in two minutes — this time both for United. Boner and Howieson were the scorers.

Ryden was booked after a foul on McDonald. Then Crichton scored No 4 for Dundee.

With three minutes to go, Newman scored his second goal and Dundee’s fifth.

Dundee — Liney; Reid, Brown; Ryden, McMillan, Stuart; McGeachie, Crichton, Newman, Waddell, Mackle.

Dundee United — Davie; Cairns, Graham; Sievwright, Dick, Dougan; Boner, McMichael, Howieson, McDonald, Junior.

“So far so good,” continued Andy.

“Goalscorers straightforward — Mackle, Waddell, Newman 2 and Crichton for Dundee. McDonald, Boner and Howieson for United.

“Two days later, though, The Courier stated in a headline: ‘Dundee sign ‘hat-trick” trialist’.”

Dundee manager Bob Shankly last night announced the provisional signing of centre-forward Kenny Cameron, of Blairgowrie Juniors.

He played against Dundee United reserves on Wednesday and scored a hat-trick.

Cameron will remain with his junior club until the end of the season. He has scored 30 goals in 18 games.

He was previously with Perth Celtic, and graduated from one of the Perth boys’ teams.

Kenny, who is 19, works as a bank clerk in Perth.

Confused, Andy concluded: “So the question is… Who didn’t score for Dundee reserves for KC to claim his hat-trick?

“I couldn’t find any correction to the match report mentioned.”
