SP Query — In May, 1997, ‘DP’ asked: Details, please, of John McCormack’s playing and coaching career? SP Answer — He started his senior career in 1976 with Clydebank, having joined them from Glasgow junior side St Roch’s. Jim Clunie then signed him for St Mirren in 1980 for £55,000. Four years on, Archie Knox took him to Dens Park in a swap deal involving Peter Mackie. From there, it was on to Airdrie in season 1986-87, and then a move to Partick Thistle the following season. John (above) retired from the playing side in 1988. Nicknamed ‘Cowboy’, he worked in some sports centres in Glasgow before getting the call to join Jim Duffy at Dens Park. On December 30, 1996, he was appointed manager of the Dark Blues after Duffy left to join Hibs.
