The letter came in and was signed by ‘Montrose Bhoy’.
He asked: “Can you give a rough detail of Lou Macari’s career?
“Also, what was his real first name and was he born in Italy?”
Christened Luigi, Macari was born in Edinburgh in 1949. He signed for Celtic in 1966 from schoolboy football. He won the league twice with the Parkhead outfit.
Macari was first capped by Scotland in 1972 and joined Manchester United the following year.
In 1978, he asked not to be considered for Scotland again after criticising the SFA’s planning and arrangements for the World Cup that year in Argentina.
In 1984, he became player-manager of Swindon Town and took them from the Fourth Division to the Second Division in five years before replacing John Lyall as manager of West Ham.
He lasted just a year at Upton Park, resigning after being fined £1,000 for breaching rule regarding betting on matches when with Swindon.
In 1991, he was appointed Birmingham City boss but that stint lasted just four months as he took the manager’s position at Stoke City.
During his time with the Potters, he was cleared in court of allegations of a tax fiddle involving under-the-counter payments to Swindon Town players.
He was soon on his way back to Celtic, replacing Liam Brady in 1993 to become just the eighth manager of the Parkhead side. In 1994, he was dismissed by Celtic chief executive Fergus McCann.
He had further managerial stints with Stoke again and Huddersfield.
