Blether: Can you imagine Dundee FC phoning the social clubbie about a big decision?
ByJohn Brown
While shuffling through cuttings in search of another story, I came across a great line.
It was in June 1977 that Dundee FC decided to have a change of manager.
Davie White, who led them to a League Cup success a few years previous, had left the club and a successor was being appointed.
That successor was the current club captain Tommy Gemmell.
The line I’m talking about came from the Tele on June 11 that year, which read: “And it can be said the choice is a popular one if the reaction of an assembly of supporters who waited outside the ground and to a phone call to the Dundee Social Club to inform them of the club’s choice is anything to go by.”
Nowadays, can you imagine any of our top-flight senior clubs phoning their supporters social club to inform them of a major club decision?
Me neither!
