Phil Tinney has been the subject of a few stories in BwB over the last few months.
He was a young player at Dens Park in the early to mid-1960s but didn’t get an extended run in the first team.
Bob Shankly signed Tinney from Liverpool on the advice of his brother Bob, then in charge of the Reds.
A few months back, he was the subject of an article in the Sunday Post.
And, with the blessing of SP sports editor David Walker, I’ve copied sections of the copy to relay some of Phil’s career with BwB readers.
Talking about his time at Anfield, he said: “I was taken on as an apprentice with other young Scots such as Alex Totten, Gordon Wallace, George Graham, Hamish MacKenzie and George Scott.
“I scored three goals in the FA Youth Cup Final against West Ham and things seemed to be going well.
“In 1964, Shanks told me to make sure my passport was ready and to get measured for a club suit as I was going on the club tour to America.
“A couple of weeks later, he said I was being freed and that his brother Bob was looking for a left-winger at Dundee.
“I signed for Dundee but made just one appearance when I scored against St Johnstone in the Summer Cup.”
After leaving Dens, he moved to Holland but ended up with a five-year ban by Fifa for breaking his contract with Heracles.
Unable to sign for a club operating under Fifa’s jurisdiction, he headed to America.
He revealed: “I had friends in Canada who recommended me to Philadelphia Spartans, who were playing in a rebel league.
“It turned out to be a good move for me.
“We had a lot of South American players, including former Argentina captain Ruben Navarro.
“After a season there, I spent three summers with Dallas Tornado, and we won the NASL in 1971.”
Now 71, he is retired in Merseyside after a career working in residential childcare.

n JAMIE Kerrigan wants to know about Dundee’s first participation in the B&Q Cup, which was the forerunner to the current Irn-Bru Cup for teams outwith the Premier League
“What were the Dundee line-ups in the semi-final and final of the 1990-91 B&Q Cup?” he asked.
In the semi-final against Kilmarnock, in which Dundee won 2-0 at Rugby Park, they lined up — Carson; Dinnie, Shannon, Chisholm (Holt), Jamieson, Craib, Frail, Forsyth, Wright, Dodds, McSkimming.
In the final against Ayr United, they won 3-2 after extra time at Fir Park, Motherwell, with the following line-up — Carson; Dinnie, Shannon, Chisholm, Jamieson, Craib, West (McBride), Forsyth, Wright, Dodds, McLeod (Frail).
